The Prisoner

A couple of years ago I was introduced to The Prisoner by one of the members on my research team – let’s be real – it was one of my drinking associates. Since then, we have fraternized with The Prisoner on many occasions. Recently, a bottle was offered to me as a gift; far be it from me to deny anyone their freedom and I was compelled to immediately release The Prisoner from his 2014 holding cell.

As I poured a copious goblet-full, the deep purple liquid shone like a beacon of salvation. This outstanding Napa Valley wine is a proprietary blend of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Charbono. Since its introduction in 2000, this wine has set a new standard for varietal blending and has gained the attention of many wine drinkers.

On first approach, the depth of the wine’s darkness reveals notes of luscious black cherry, black currant, smoky pepper and slight scents of black licorice. On the palate there is an uncompromising jammy-sweetness exposing Zinfandel as the most prominent of the blend. Bold and powerful, slight hints of oak and anise are present on the finish combined with a spread of soft, velvety tannins.

Due to its sturdiness, this wine can be nicely paired with robust meat dishes, or meals laden with Bolognese sauce. It can be a fine accompaniment to hearty stews or even thick barbequed burgers and grilled ribs.

The price point for this red blend may be a little higher than your average grocery store variety, but what comes out of the bottle packs a powerful punch of full-bodied, fruity deliciousness.  The Prisoner is a great accent to a romantic dinner, barbeque with friends or a nice gift to bring to any neighborhood soiree.

Santé!

  1. Nice post! I also got the Prisoner as a gift and thought it was very nice. We live in Napa Valley so the prices don’t faze me anymore – I just assume anything under $100 is bargain wine. 🙂 You might enjoy our wine country blog: http://www.topochinesvino.com
