Burney’s Bakery in Southport, NC

In the sleepy seaside town of Southport there isn’t a lot to get you pumped.  Most restaurants and bars close by 9 p.m. and the village goes to sleep.  Maybe it’s because there is a reason to spring out of bed at the crack of dawn and welcome the day.  All-knowing residents and discriminating visitors converge on Burney’s Bakery, filing in, zombie-like as soon as Burney’s doors unlatch at 6 a.m. each weekday.

croissantsThey are dependably serving up the most tantalizing, delectable coffee companions this side of the Cape Fear River. I have heard many a Southport local refer to their wares as Southport Crack.  Why?  Because once you’ve savored their scrumptious creations, you’ll line up daily for another fix, mesmerized by their allure.

Burney’s is probably best known for their deep-fried, sugary croissants. This is not your average donut.  No, no… Krispy Kreme beware, there’s a new kid on the block.  Mingling the airiness of a croissant and the sweet, crispiness of a fried donut, Burney’s takes it to another level by injecting these lovely vessels with goodness in many forms.  Lemon custard, Bavarian crème, chocolate, apple-cinnamon, cherry, butter cream are many of the infusions that bring a smile to one’s face on their first bite. It’s either downhill or uphill from there – depending on your vantage point.yum

If you feel the need to get crazy, sample Burney’s apple fritters.  I believe that they are the best ever!  Extremely crisp and hearty, they are not overpowered by mushy applesauce inside. They are made with just enough apple pieces to keep you satisfied without being overwhelmed by fruit filling.

Burneys offer other pastries like fruit tarts, cheesecake cupcakes and a host of other delicacies that vary week to week.  Hands down, the croissants are to die for.  So if you’re in the Southport area make sure that Burney’s Bakery is a stop on your itinerary – you won’t be disappointed. And oh yeah, they offer ice cream too, but the croissants intercept me every time.

Burney’s Bakery is located at 808 N. Howe Street in Southport, North Carolina.  Make it a stop on your way to the waterfront!
