Rosé: The Essence of Southeastern France

Provence, in the South of France, is known for many things. Great masters such as Picasso, Cezanne, and Matisse were inspired by the beauty of their surroundings. Art comes in many forms, and oenophiles the world over look to this region, south of the Alps, as the predominant producer of rosé wine.

 Rosé is a wine that really makes a pronounced appearance during spring and summer; although its subtleness can be savored year-round.  In fact, a chilled glass of rosé is a perfect accompaniment to any festive celebration in and around holiday time.

 I recently opened a bottle of 2017 Bieler Pere & Fils rosé, unleashing all the ethereal components of a mistral stroll through French lavender fields. In a glass, this wine melded colors between light salmon hues and the blondness of newly cut straw. The nose offered a shielded vapor of orange blossom, firmly followed by more distinct aromas of lemon-lime. The first sip revealed slight acidity with a crisp citrus lathering on the tongue.  

This wine is casual and easy to drink. It is not overly complicated and relaxed enough to enjoy with most food pairings. Blended with 41% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 19% Cinsault, 15% Cabernet, and 5% Rolle, it makes a perfect companion to most meals.  In my case, I paired it with grilled lamb with rosemary and garlic, butternut squash with cinnamon and cayenne pepper, and decadent honey corn bread.

The outcome was sheer success.  The wine functioned as a palate cleanser and was fun and festive as my companions and I celebrated the beginning of a new year. I felt assured by the smiles around my table that this wine dinner will be one of many in the upcoming year.
